Your Boat Mattress Questions Answered
From measuring tricky V-berths to choosing the right firmness — we've got you covered
Boat mattress sizes vary depending on your vessel type and berth configuration. Common berth types include:
- V-berths: Tapered towards the bow
- Island berths: Rectangular cabin beds
- Quarter berths: Narrow side berths
- Saloon berths: Convertible seating areas
Most boat berths require custom sizes due to hull curves, tapered shapes, or unusual layouts. We recommend measuring your berth carefully, accounting for any obstructions, and either choosing from our 60+ ready-made shapes or using our custom quote tool to design a perfectly fitted mattress.
To measure for a custom boat mattress:
- Measure the width at the widest and narrowest points
- Measure the length along both sides for tapered berths
- Note any cuts needed for hull curves, bulkheads, or fixtures
- Sketch the shape including all curves and corners
- Measure the desired depth (typically 5-25cm)
Take photos from directly above if possible. Use our online quote tool to upload your sketch and measurements — we'll create a mattress that fits perfectly, even for complex V-berth shapes.
The ideal boat mattress depth depends on your available headroom and comfort preferences:
- 5-7.5cm: For quarter berths with limited space
- 10-15cm: Compact comfort
- 17.5-20cm: Standard comfort (most popular)
- 25cm: Luxury home-quality sleep
Consider your cabin headroom when sitting up, and any storage access beneath the berth. Most boat owners choose 15-20cm mattresses as the sweet spot between comfort and practicality.
Yes, we specialise in cutting mattresses to follow hull curves, bulkheads, chainplates, and any obstacles in your boat. Our custom cutting service handles:
- Tapered shapes: For V-berths and bow cabins
- Curved edges: To match hull contours
- Cutouts: For mast bases or through-hull fittings
- Notches: For access panels or lockers
Simply upload a sketch showing where cuts are needed, and we'll manufacture your mattress to fit perfectly. This is one of our most common requests for boat mattresses.

Every boat is unique, so we recommend measuring your actual berth rather than assuming standard dimensions.
Firmness choice depends on your personal preference and sleeping position:
- Soft: Best for lightweight side sleepers
- Medium: Suitable for most sleepers and couples with different preferences
- Medium-Firm: Popular choice for back and combination sleepers
- Firm: Ideal for back sleepers and those who prefer strong support
- Extra-Firm: For stomach sleepers or those with back issues
Most customers choose Medium or Medium-Firm for boat mattresses.
"Absolutely spot on. The mattress fits our V-berth like it was always meant to be there — no gaps, no bunching, just perfect. We've done two weeks aboard since it arrived and the difference in sleep quality is night and day. Wish we'd done this years ago."
